RAKBANK Becomes First UAE Conventional Bank to Offer Crypto Trading via Bitpanda

RAKBANK Becomes First UAE Conventional Bank to Offer Crypto Trading via Bitpanda

RAKBANK, officially the National Bank of Ras Al Khaimah, has made history as the first traditional UAE bank to enable retail customers to buy, sell, and swap cryptocurrencies directly via its mobile banking app—leveraging a partnership with Vienna‑based Bitpanda.

What’s New?

  • Full crypto access through RAKBANK app: The service, backed by Bitpanda Broker MENA DMCC—a Virtual Asset Service Provider regulated by the UAE's Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA)—offers seamless crypto services embedded within the existing RAKBANK user experience.

  • Zero forex hassle: Customers transact entirely in UAE dirhams (AED), eliminating foreign currency conversion fees and associated FX risks. Trades settle directly from current or savings accounts, bypassing the need for external exchanges.

  • Initial coin list and platform scope: Launching with eight major cryptocurrencies—including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and Ripple—RAKBANK plans to expand its offerings in the months ahead.

Strategic Significance

Why It Matters

The integration positions RAKBANK as a pioneer in MENA’s digital banking transformation. By embedding regulated crypto services into its core banking app, it addresses adoption barriers—like complexity, regulatory uncertainty, and fiat handling—head-on.

Power of Partnership with Bitpanda

Rather than building crypto infrastructure from scratch, RAKBANK opted to integrate Bitpanda’s proven, ISO‑certified infrastructure—enabling rapid deployment and lower costs. Bitpanda Broker MENA brings expertise and VARA licensing to the table, while Bitpanda’s broader regulated presence in Europe lends credibility.

This approach is consistent with other institutions using Bitpanda Technology Solutions, including European banks such as Raiffeisen, LBBW, and German neobank N26.

Roll‑out Roadmap

  • Availability: Initially invitation-only, with a phased rollout expected during the second half of 2025.

  • Regulatory alignment: The service's expansion is subject to continued collaboration with VARA and the UAE’s Central Bank (CBUAE).

Benefits & Challenges

Pro Con
Regulated, in‑app crypto access with minimal friction Crypto’s volatility still presents inherent risk to users
AED settlement avoids FX fees and improves convenience Adoption depends on customer interest and trust in new features
Ability to scale fast using Bitpanda’s modular infrastructure Wider offerings may hinge on regulatory approvals
First-mover advantage in UAE retail banking Reliance on third-party tech may limit RAKBANK's strategic control

Broader Context & Market Impact

This move reflects a broader shift: traditional banks in the UAE and GCC are increasingly teaming up with licensed fintech providers to bypass infrastructure and licensing delays. Bitpanda secured in‑principle approval from VARA in December 2024 to operate in the UAE, anchoring its legitimacy for such collaborations.

As Dubai and Abu Dhabi continue regulatory innovation in the digital assets space, RAKBANK's offering may serve as a template for banks regionally. It aligns with national goals to position the UAE as a global crypto and fintech hub.

RAKBANK’s integration with Bitpanda marks a milestone in bridging traditional banking with crypto services in the UAE. Through AED‑based trades, in‑app convenience, and a fully regulated framework, RAKBANK is paving the way for broader retail crypto adoption. While mainstream uptake will depend on customer reception and regulatory milestones, this partnership signals a strategic shift in how regional banks deliver digital asset access.
