Leaders of Brazil’s $190M Crypto Ponzi Scheme Sentenced to Over 170 Years in Landmark Fraud Case
The Braiscompany crypto Ponzi scheme in Brazil, which defrauded approximately 20,000 investors of over $190 million, exemplifies the dangers of unregulated investment opportunities in the cryptocurrency space.
Braiscompany, led by Joel Ferreira de Souza, promised investors high monthly returns through cryptocurrency trading. However, instead of legitimate trading, the operation functioned as a Ponzi scheme, using funds from new investors to pay earlier ones. The scheme raised around R$1.11 billion (approximately $190 million) before collapsing.
Legal Actions
In April 2025, a Brazilian court sentenced de Souza to 128 years in prison for operating an unlicensed financial institution and money laundering. Two associates received sentences of 27 and 15 years, respectively. The court also ordered the seizure of R$36 million, though the extent of victim restitution remains uncertain.
Broader Implications
This case underscores the need for increased regulatory oversight in the cryptocurrency sector and highlights the importance of investor education to prevent similar fraudulent schemes.
