Kuwait Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Crypto Mining to Safeguard National Grid and Align with Global Regulations
Kuwait has intensified its crackdown on illegal cryptocurrency mining operations, focusing on residential properties suspected of unauthorized crypto activities. The Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy has begun disconnecting power to these properties, following coordinated efforts with the Ministry of Interior to identify and penalize violators. Authorities utilize smart meter data to detect unusually high power consumption patterns indicative of mining operations.
This initiative is part of Kuwait's broader strategy to combat illegal activities that threaten public infrastructure. Unauthorized cryptocurrency mining leads to excessive electrical loads, causing power outages and disruptions to essential services. The government has emphasized the importance of maintaining grid stability and public safety.
The Public Prosecution is actively investigating over 60 individuals involved in these illegal mining activities. Some suspects have been detained, while others have been released on bail. Financial records of the accused reveal significant profits from mining operations, raising concerns about potential money laundering activities.
In July 2023, Kuwait's Capital Markets Authority issued a comprehensive ban on all cryptocurrency-related activities, including mining, payments, and investments, to align with international anti-money laundering standards set by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). The ban also prohibits the recognition of cryptocurrencies as decentralized currencies and restricts companies from offering crypto-related services. Violators face penalties under Kuwait's anti-money laundering and terrorist financing laws.
The government's crackdown underscores its commitment to safeguarding national infrastructure and adhering to global financial regulations. While some miners may consider relocating to regions with more lenient regulations, Kuwait's stringent enforcement signals a firm stance against unauthorized cryptocurrency activities.
