Kraken Secures MiCA License in Ireland, Enabling EU-Wide Crypto Services

Kraken has become one of the first major global cryptocurrency exchanges to receive a MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets) license from the Central Bank of Ireland, allowing it to offer regulated crypto services across the entire European Economic Area (EEA).

The license enables Kraken to “passport” its services to 30 European countries under one unified framework, simplifying operations and accelerating its expansion throughout the EU.

MiCA, the EU’s new crypto regulation coming fully into effect by the end of 2024, aims to standardize rules on crypto trading, custody, and consumer protections. Kraken’s approval places it among the first movers in a regulated EU crypto market that is expected to grow rapidly.

Kraken’s co-CEO Arjun Sethi said the approval allows the company to “expand its product offering, grow its client base, and deliver fully regulated services to millions more people across Europe.”

Growing Footprint in Europe

Kraken already holds other key European licenses:

  • An Electronic Money Institution (EMI) license in Ireland since 2023.

  • A MiFID II license via its Cyprus entity, allowing derivatives and structured product trading.

  • VASP registrations in countries like France, Spain, and Italy.

These give Kraken a uniquely broad regulatory foundation among crypto platforms operating in Europe.

What’s Next for Kraken?

Kraken’s share of euro-denominated crypto trades has doubled in the past year, now making up 17.5% of global trading volume. With MiCA in hand, the company plans to expand offerings like staking, euro-based trading pairs, and tokenized products.

As competitors like Coinbase, Bybit, and Crypto.com rush to secure similar licenses, Kraken's early move in Ireland—known for its strong financial oversight—gives it a strategic edge.

Kraken’s MiCA license positions it as a regulatory leader in Europe’s crypto landscape—boosting its credibility, institutional appeal, and potential for future innovation across the continent.
