Telegram Cracks Down on Major Illicit Crypto Marketplaces, Halting $35 Billion in Fraudulent Stablecoin Transactions
Telegram has recently taken decisive action to dismantle two of the largest illicit online marketplaces operating on its platform: Haowang Guarantee and Xinbi Guarantee. These marketplaces were primarily used for crypto-related scams, money laundering, and other illegal activities, processing a combined total of approximately $35 billion in illicit transactions.
Background and Operations
Haowang Guarantee, formerly known as Huione Guarantee, was a Chinese-language marketplace operating on Telegram. It facilitated a wide range of illicit activities, including money laundering, scam services, and the sale of stolen data. The platform utilized the Tether (USDT) stablecoin for transactions, which is commonly used in such illicit operations due to its perceived stability and ease of use.
Xinbi Guarantee, another major marketplace, was incorporated in Colorado, USA, and operated similarly to Haowang Guarantee. It offered services such as money laundering for scammers, sale of stolen data, and even facilitated "pig butchering" scams, a type of investment fraud. Despite its operations being based in the U.S., Xinbi Guarantee primarily served Chinese-speaking scammers.
Telegram's Crackdown
The closure of these marketplaces followed a series of investigative reports by Elliptic, a blockchain analytics firm, which highlighted the scale of illicit activities on these platforms. Elliptic's findings were instrumental in prompting Telegram to take action. In response, Telegram banned thousands of accounts associated with these marketplaces, leading to their shutdown.
Implications and Future Outlook
The shutdown of Haowang and Xinbi Guarantees represents a significant blow to the infrastructure supporting global online scams. However, experts caution that this action may only be a temporary setback. Given the lucrative nature of these illicit operations, there is a high likelihood that the operators will attempt to rebuild on other platforms or under new identities. Elliptic has already identified similar marketplaces, such as Tudou Guarantee, which may serve as potential successors.
Furthermore, the use of Tether (USDT) in these operations raises concerns about the role of stablecoins in facilitating illicit activities. While Tether has mechanisms to freeze transactions linked to illicit activities, its widespread use in such operations suggests a need for more stringent oversight and regulation in the cryptocurrency space.
While Telegram's actions have disrupted two major illicit marketplaces, the persistence and adaptability of cybercriminals in the cryptocurrency ecosystem indicate that this issue is far from resolved. Ongoing vigilance and cooperation between platforms, regulators, and blockchain analytics firms will be essential in combating the growing threat of online crypto scams.
