Spot Bitcoin ETFs Suffer $812M Outflow — Ether ETFs Halt 20‑Day Inflow Run

In a major shift in crypto market sentiment, spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) experienced their second-largest single-day net outflow, with approximately $812 million pulled out on August 1. This massive outflow was led by large redemptions from institutional players, particularly Fidelity’s FBTC and ARK Invest’s ARKB, which saw outflows of around $331 million and $328 million, respectively.

Other funds also contributed to the total, including Grayscale’s GBTC with over $66 million withdrawn and Bitwise’s BITB losing around $38 million. Interestingly, BlackRock’s IBIT, which has led the ETF inflow race throughout 2025, reported minimal losses of just $2.6 million.

Despite these redemptions, trading activity remained high, with over $6.1 billion in combined daily volume across all Bitcoin ETFs. This indicates that while some investors are taking profits or repositioning, overall interest in spot crypto investment vehicles remains strong.

Ethereum ETFs Also See Pullback

Ethereum ETFs weren’t spared either. After enjoying a 20-day inflow streak—the longest since their launch—Ether-based ETFs registered a net outflow of $152 million on the same day. This marks the end of an impressive run driven by enthusiasm over spot Ether ETF approvals earlier this year.

Leading the losses was Grayscale’s ETHE, which recorded outflows of nearly $48 million, followed by Bitwise’s ETHW with around $40 million, and Fidelity’s FETH with over $6 million in redemptions. Other providers, including BlackRock’s ETHA, showed neutral or minimal activity.

Market Interpretation

These outflows suggest a temporary pause in bullish sentiment among institutional investors. Analysts point to several potential causes, including:

  • Profit-taking after strong Q2 performance

  • Shifts in monetary policy expectations, particularly interest rate speculation

  • Ongoing regulatory uncertainty surrounding digital assets in the U.S. and abroad

Despite the drop, the total assets under management (AUM) for spot Bitcoin ETFs still stand at approximately $146 billion, representing around 6.5% of Bitcoin’s total market cap. For Ether ETFs, AUM is estimated at $20 billion, making up about 4.7% of Ethereum’s market cap.

Institutional Trends Still Favor Ether

Recent institutional reports indicate that Ethereum continues to gain traction in treasury holdings and corporate adoption. Some forecasts suggest that corporate accumulation of ETH could reach 10% of total supply by year-end, driven by staking rewards, DeFi integration, and future-proofing strategies.

While Bitcoin remains the dominant crypto ETF product, Ether’s utility-driven narrative and the evolving role of ETH in Web3 ecosystems are positioning it as a long-term institutional asset class.

The ETF outflows on August 1 are a reminder of how quickly capital can move in the digital asset space. Still, the sustained high trading volumes, continued interest in Ethereum, and solid AUM figures indicate that this is more likely a market recalibration than a shift in long-term investor conviction.

Crypto ETFs are no longer just speculative instruments—they’re becoming critical vehicles for large-scale exposure. And even with occasional pullbacks, the market trend suggests growing maturity and broader integration into traditional portfolios.
