Marathon Digital Leads $20M Round in Two Prime
Marathon Digital Holdings (NASDAQ: MARA), one of the largest publicly traded Bitcoin miners in the United States, has led a $20 million investment round in Two Prime, a digital asset investment manager specializing in institutional-grade yield strategies. The move strengthens MARA’s commitment to transforming its Bitcoin holdings into yield-generating assets and signals rising institutional interest in active digital asset management.
Strategic Shift: From Passive Holding to Active Yield
Marathon has quadrupled its Bitcoin allocation on Two Prime’s Separately Managed Account (SMA) platform—from 500 BTC to 2,000 BTC. This repositioning aims to maximize capital efficiency by actively generating yield from otherwise idle bitcoin on its balance sheet.
“As custodians of substantial Bitcoin reserves, we’ve moved beyond passive strategies and are now focused on achieving meaningful risk-adjusted returns through institutional yield programs,” said Salman Khan, CFO at Marathon.
The SMA platform offered by Two Prime allows clients to earn yield by deploying assets across structured, risk-managed lending strategies. These include crypto-native liquidity provision, overcollateralized lending, and sophisticated hedging mechanisms—tailored for institutions seeking capital preservation alongside returns.
Institutionalization of Bitcoin Finance
Two Prime, which manages approximately $1.75 billion in institutional capital, has emerged as a leader in structured yield products. It is now the largest U.S.-based CeFi lender by active deployment, according to internal metrics.
The deal gives Marathon a minority equity stake in Two Prime, bolstering a deeper long-term partnership between the mining giant and the yield platform.
“Marathon’s investment is not just financial—it’s directional. It signals that the next wave of Bitcoin utility will be about yield, not just price,” stated Alexander S. Blume, CEO of Two Prime.
The firm also noted increasing demand from sovereign wealth funds, public companies, and pension allocators exploring BTC yield strategies. This trend aligns with a growing narrative around the “institutionalization” of Bitcoin—where it becomes a treasury asset capable of generating recurring cash flows.
Post-Halving Adaptation Among Miners
Following Bitcoin’s April 2024 halving—which reduced block rewards from 6.25 to 3.125 BTC—miners like Marathon are reassessing profitability strategies. With on-chain revenues cut in half, many are diversifying into AI computing, data center hosting, and now BTC yield generation.
Marathon’s latest move reflects an emerging theme: asset optimization over mere accumulation. Rather than selling mined BTC, the company is now focused on monetizing those assets through capital-efficient structures.
Risks and Forward Outlook
While the partnership offers an avenue for Marathon to unlock additional income streams, analysts warn of associated risks. These include:
-
Counterparty exposure in centralized lending ecosystems
-
Potential dilution from MARA’s ongoing ATM (at-the-market) equity program
-
Regulatory scrutiny around crypto lending and yield offerings in U.S. and global markets
Despite these headwinds, the announcement has been well received. Shares of Marathon (MARA) rose 3.6% intraday following the news, reflecting investor optimism around new revenue models in the post-halving era.
Marathon’s investment in Two Prime and the fourfold increase in BTC allocation represents a significant pivot for the mining industry. As yield becomes a central theme in Bitcoin finance, traditional miners are positioning themselves not just as producers, but also as institutional asset managers. This dual role could redefine the economics of Bitcoin operations and broaden the financial utility of digital assets across global capital markets.
