FBI Reports $9.3 Billion Lost to Crypto Scams in 2024, with Elderly Most Affected

In 2024, cryptocurrency-related scams in the United States resulted in a record $9.3 billion in reported losses, marking a 66% increase from the previous year. This surge underscores the growing exploitation of digital assets in online fraud schemes.

Key Findings from the FBI's 2024 Report

  • Dominance of Investment Scams: Investment frauds were the leading type of crypto-related scams, accounting for over $5.8 billion in losses. These scams often involved high-yield investment programs and "pig butchering" schemes, where perpetrators build trust with victims before defrauding them of substantial amounts.

  • Impact on Older Adults: Individuals aged 60 and above were disproportionately affected, losing nearly $2.8 billion—representing 30% of total crypto-related scam losses. This demographic reported an average loss of $83,000, more than four times the average loss across all age groups.

  • Emergence of Crypto ATMs as a Scam Vector: Scammers have increasingly utilized crypto ATMs to facilitate fraudulent transactions. In 2024, over 2,600 seniors reported losses exceeding $107 million through these machines.

  • Geographic Disparities: California reported the highest number of scam-related losses, while Vermont and the Northern Mariana Islands had the fewest.

Broader Cybercrime Landscape

Overall, cybercrime in the U.S. reached unprecedented levels in 2024, with total reported losses amounting to $16.6 billion—a 33% increase from the previous year. While cryptocurrency scams were significant, other major threats included phishing, extortion, and personal data breaches.

Implications and Recommendations

The FBI's report highlights the need for enhanced public awareness and vigilance, especially among older adults, who are particularly susceptible to sophisticated scams. Educational initiatives and robust cybersecurity measures are essential to mitigate the risks associated with digital asset investments.

For those seeking to protect themselves, it's advisable to exercise caution with unsolicited investment opportunities, verify the legitimacy of platforms before engaging, and report any suspicious activities to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov.
