Ethereum Whale Activity Surges to Levels Last Seen in 2017
Ethereum (ETH) has seen a remarkable uptick in whale accumulation over the past week, with on-chain analytics firm Glassnode reporting that the scale of buying activity by large holders has not been observed since 2017. Despite a 3.7% dip in price on Tuesday—bringing ETH down to $2,555—the asset managed to retain a critical support zone amid intensifying long-term interest from major holders.
Whales Accumulate Over 800,000 ETH Daily
According to Glassnode, wallets holding between 1,000 and 10,000 ETH have added more than 800,000 ETH daily over the past several days. On June 12 alone, whale wallets recorded an inflow of 871,000 ETH, the highest single-day net accumulation for 2025 so far. In total, these wallets now control more than 14.3 million ETH, signaling robust confidence in the asset’s long-term potential.
Further on-chain data indicates that even larger wallets—those holding between 10,000 and 100,000 ETH—have accumulated approximately 1.49 million ETH over the past month, valued at nearly $3.8 billion. This group now holds nearly 27% of the total circulating ETH supply, reinforcing their influence over market dynamics.
Institutional Inflows and ETF Demand Fuel the Accumulation
This surge in whale activity coincides with massive inflows into institutional ETH products. According to data from investment tracking firms, spot Ethereum ETFs have attracted $1.37 billion in net inflows over the last 19 trading days. Just last week, ETH-based investment products took in $583 million, reflecting escalating interest from traditional finance sectors and asset managers.
The approval and rollout of ETH ETFs in major markets appear to be driving this behavior. These funds enable large investors to gain exposure to Ethereum without holding the asset directly, and whales may be positioning themselves ahead of a potential supply squeeze triggered by ETF redemptions and demand.
On-Chain Trends: Accumulation, Exchange Outflows, and Volatility
Complementing the whale data is a consistent trend of ETH outflows from centralized exchanges, suggesting long-term holders are moving coins to cold storage rather than keeping them available for trading. Additionally, short liquidations and short squeezes have supported brief upward movements, although the price remains trapped below a key resistance zone near $2,700.
Despite this, the continued whale accumulation and ETF-related buying suggest a bullish undercurrent that may not yet be fully priced in.
Technical Landscape: Holding the Line
ETH has shown resilience around the $2,540–$2,555 range, bouncing off local support while still struggling to break through overhead resistance. A decisive move above $2,700 could trigger renewed bullish momentum, with analysts pointing to potential upside targets near $3,200 and beyond if accumulation persists.
Still, price consolidation without a breakout may lead to further sideways movement as the market digests recent gains and incoming institutional demand.
Conclusion: Smart Money Signals Ahead of Market Movement
The scale of Ethereum whale accumulation in June 2025 is drawing comparisons to the pre-bull run period of 2017. While ETH's price remains below key resistance levels, the combination of strong on-chain activity, robust ETF inflows, and shrinking exchange balances suggests that significant upward price action could be on the horizon—particularly if macro conditions and crypto sentiment improve.
As smart money builds positions, retail and mid-tier investors may soon follow, potentially setting the stage for Ethereum’s next major breakout.
