Ethereum Price Surge Spurs Profit-Taking Among Short-Term Holders
Ethereum (ETH) has experienced a significant price surge, climbing approximately 43% over the past month to reach around $4,283. This upward momentum has prompted a notable increase in profit-taking activities, particularly among short-term holders.
According to on-chain analytics platform Glassnode, short-term investors—those holding ETH for less than 155 days—are realizing profits at a rate of about $553 million per day, as measured by the seven-day simple moving average. This marks a substantial uptick from July's daily average of $771 million, when ETH was trading below $3,600 .
In contrast, long-term holders have been more conservative in their profit-taking, with activity levels comparable to those observed in December 2024. This divergence suggests that short-term traders may be anticipating a near-term pullback in ETH's price .
Despite the recent rally, ETH remains approximately 12.7% below its all-time high of $4,828, reached in November 2021. Market data indicates that if ETH approaches $4,700, approximately $2.23 billion in positions could be at risk of liquidation .
Analysts offer mixed perspectives on ETH's near-term outlook. Some view the current price levels as indicative of a potential "altseason," with capital rotating away from Bitcoin into altcoins like Ethereum. Others caution that overbought conditions, as reflected by ETH's relative strength index (RSI) of 68.8, could lead to a pullback to around $3,600 .
In summary, while Ethereum's recent price surge has been driven by increased institutional demand and bullish market sentiment, the concurrent rise in profit-taking among short-term holders suggests that caution may be warranted in the near term.
