Citi Projects Bitcoin to Reach $135K by Year-End, With Bullish Potential Topping $199K
Global banking giant Citigroup has released a new outlook for Bitcoin, projecting a base-case price target of $135,000 by the end of 2025. The bank cites increasing institutional interest, sustained spot Bitcoin ETF inflows, and favorable macroeconomic trends as key drivers of this forecast.
In its most optimistic scenario, Citi believes Bitcoin could climb as high as $199,000, fueled by accelerated adoption, continued investor confidence, and robust inflows into cryptocurrency funds.
“We’re seeing a maturing market with real infrastructure behind it now,” analysts at Citi wrote. “ETF demand has stabilized at a high level, and global monetary policies remain relatively supportive of risk assets.”
Three Scenarios Driving Citi’s Forecast
Base Case – $135,000
Citi’s central projection expects steady growth in the digital asset sector. With over $15 billion in net inflows to U.S.-based Bitcoin ETFs since January 2025 and continued demand from both retail and institutional investors, Bitcoin is poised to consolidate above the six-figure mark. Citi also factors in user growth of roughly 20%, along with global adoption trends, particularly in regions like Latin America and Southeast Asia where crypto utility is expanding.
Bull Case – $199,000
In this scenario, Bitcoin benefits from a convergence of favorable events: a surge in ETF demand, sustained regulatory clarity, and positive sentiment across equities and tech markets. Citi analysts note that a sharp rise in institutional capital allocation to crypto—potentially from pension and sovereign wealth funds—could supercharge the market, pushing BTC near the $200K level.
Bear Case – $64,000
A more cautious projection considers the impact of macroeconomic instability or sudden regulatory crackdowns. If ETF inflows taper off and the global risk environment turns bearish—due to rising interest rates, a tech-led equity downturn, or stricter regulations—Bitcoin could fall back toward $64,000. This level would still represent a solid gain from earlier cycle lows but reflects subdued momentum.
ETF Momentum Is Key
Since the approval of several spot Bitcoin ETFs earlier this year, including offerings from BlackRock, Fidelity, and VanEck, the crypto market has seen a significant increase in liquidity and investor participation. The success of these products is seen as a leading indicator of broader mainstream acceptance.
“Bitcoin’s recent resilience above $100,000 suggests the market is maturing beyond speculative trading and entering a new utility-driven phase,” Citi noted.
While Bitcoin’s future price remains subject to volatility and macro shifts, Citi’s updated models reflect increasing confidence in digital assets as part of diversified investment strategies. Whether the crypto market fulfills the bullish trajectory or consolidates around the base case, the overall outlook for 2025 remains decisively positive.
