BTCFi TVL Surges 22x to $7B in 2024, but Trust and Infrastructure Remain Major Hurdles

Bitcoin-native DeFi, commonly referred to as BTCFi, has experienced explosive growth in 2024, with its total value locked (TVL) skyrocketing from just $304 million in January to over $7 billion by mid-2025—a more than 2,200% increase, according to recent data from DeFiLlama and Cointelegraph. This surge has been fueled by an influx of new protocols, rising institutional interest, and growing demand for Bitcoin yield strategies. However, despite the boom, the ecosystem faces significant challenges around user trust, technological maturity, and ecosystem scalability.

🚀 Growth Drivers: Innovation, Institutional Capital, and Market Momentum

BTCFi’s expansion can be attributed to a convergence of structural and market-level factors:

  • New Protocols & Liquidity Layers: Projects like BounceBit, Merlin Chain, and Bitlayer have introduced advanced smart contract functionality to Bitcoin Layer 2 ecosystems, enabling staking, lending, and synthetic asset issuance natively on or anchored to BTC.

  • Institutional Inflows: Growing interest from hedge funds and fintech firms—buoyed by the success of U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs—has led to a surge in wrapped BTC products and restaking mechanisms. UTXO Management recently projected that Bitcoin-based restaking could absorb over $50 billion in TVL by 2026 if infrastructure risks are addressed.

  • Yield Generation on Bitcoin: Users seeking yield on BTC holdings are increasingly turning to BTCFi instead of Ethereum-based DeFi, attracted by tools offering restaking, non-custodial minting, and cross-chain utility.

⚠️ Key Challenges: Trust, Security, and Infrastructure

Despite its exponential growth, BTCFi adoption is still limited by core concerns:

1. Trust Deficit

According to a June 2025 Cointelegraph report, 36% of potential users refrain from BTCFi participation due to fears of rug pulls, opaque smart contracts, and centralized bridge risks. While newer projects are implementing audits and proof-of-TVL mechanisms, trust remains fragile.

2. Security Risks

A number of BTCFi protocols remain relatively young, raising concerns about exploitability. At least $35 million in value has been lost to protocol bugs or misconfigured bridges in 2024 alone. Users and institutions alike demand higher security standards before further capital flows in.

3. Infrastructure Limitations

Bitcoin’s limited smart contract capabilities mean most BTCFi applications operate on Layer 2 solutions or external chains, often requiring wrapped BTC (WBTC, tBTC, etc.). This increases complexity and introduces custodial or cross-chain vulnerabilities. Moreover, liquidity remains shallow compared to Ethereum, with fragmented support across multiple rollups and bridges.

📊 The Bigger Picture: BTCFi's Long-Term Potential

Despite current bottlenecks, many analysts believe BTCFi could become a defining sector in decentralized finance. A joint report by Binance Research and Standard Chartered suggests that BTCFi’s TVL could cross $100 billion by 2027, assuming progress in three areas:

  • Smart Contract Layering: Technologies like BitVM, Babylon, and ZeroSync could enhance Bitcoin’s programmability without compromising its base-layer security.

  • Cross-Chain Interoperability: Integration of trusted bridges and modular L2s could improve liquidity flow and scalability.

  • Regulatory Clarity: The repeal of the SEC’s SAB 121 ruling in mid-2025 has made it easier for institutional custodians to hold and deploy BTC in yield-generating products, paving the way for broader institutional activity.

🧠 Expert Insight

Solv Protocol’s founder Ryan Chow recently commented that BTCFi could eventually "outpace Ethereum DeFi in total asset base" due to Bitcoin’s unrivaled market dominance and growing appetite for BTC-native financial products.

However, he cautioned that the ecosystem must avoid “politicization, centralization, and blacklisting mechanisms” that plague some existing DeFi layers, warning that the only viable path forward is radical transparency and non-custodial innovation.

BTCFi has emerged as one of 2024’s most dynamic DeFi sectors, achieving a meteoric rise in TVL and positioning Bitcoin as more than just a store of value. Yet, its long-term sustainability hinges on addressing structural risks—security, trust, and infrastructure.

If these are solved, BTCFi could fundamentally reshape how Bitcoin functions in the broader financial ecosystem, transforming it from “digital gold” into the beating heart of decentralized, programmable finance.
