Bitcoin Set for Massive Short Squeeze as BTC Dominance Climbs to 62%
July 23, 2025 – Bitcoin (BTC) appears to be on the edge of a significant short squeeze, as a combination of thin order-book liquidity and rising bearish sentiment across derivatives markets sets the stage for a potential price surge. At the same time, Bitcoin's market dominance has risen sharply to 62%, its highest level since late 2021, indicating growing capital rotation away from altcoins and back into the original cryptocurrency.
Order-Book Illiquidity Heightens Risk of Volatility
Recent data from Kaiko and CoinGlass show that order-book liquidity on major exchanges like Binance, Bybit, and OKX has dropped to multi-month lows. This means there is less available BTC for purchase near the current spot price—currently hovering around $72,500—making the market more susceptible to sudden price movements.
When liquidity is low, even a modest influx of buy orders can trigger rapid price increases. If those increases force traders with short positions (bets against the price) to exit, a short squeeze occurs. This cascades into more buying pressure as positions are forcefully liquidated.
Derivatives Market Skewed Toward Shorts
According to data from CoinGlass, Bitcoin's funding rates have turned negative across several perpetual futures markets, suggesting that a majority of traders are shorting the asset. Open interest in BTC futures has also surged, now sitting above $25 billion, showing high speculative activity. This rising open interest, coupled with a majority of traders positioned short, creates the perfect storm for a short squeeze if the market turns against them.
BTC Dominance Reaches 62% – Confidence or Capitulation?
Another key factor is Bitcoin’s surging dominance in the crypto market. As of today, BTC accounts for 62% of the total crypto market capitalization, up from 55% just a month ago. This sharp increase indicates that investors are consolidating into Bitcoin while fleeing higher-risk altcoins, many of which have struggled in recent weeks due to regulatory uncertainty and weak price action.
Traditionally, a rising BTC dominance metric signals that market participants see Bitcoin as a safer store of value compared to other digital assets—particularly during times of macroeconomic uncertainty or heightened volatility.
What Comes Next?
If Bitcoin breaks through its current resistance around $73,000, analysts expect a wave of liquidations to hit the derivatives market. This could push the price rapidly toward the next psychological level at $75,000, with some predicting a spike as high as $78,000–$80,000 in the short term if the squeeze accelerates.
"Conditions are ripe for a textbook short squeeze," noted crypto analyst Will Clemente. "With dominance climbing, order books thinning, and traders overleveraged to the downside, a violent upside move could catch the market off guard."
However, if bulls fail to reclaim momentum, and spot demand doesn’t materialize, there is also a risk that shorts could continue to pile in, dragging Bitcoin back below the $70K support level.
Bitcoin is at a critical tipping point. Market dynamics suggest that the next move could be sharp and sudden. Whether it's a bullish breakout triggered by a short squeeze or a deeper correction hinges on incoming liquidity and trader behavior in the coming days.
