Bitcoin Could Reach $1.3 Million by 2035 as Institutional Demand Surges, Says Bitwise

Bitwise Asset Management has projected that Bitcoin could trade near $1.3 million by 2035, driven by accelerating institutional adoption, limited supply, and ongoing macroeconomic pressures. The forecast highlights Bitcoin’s growing role as a mainstream investment asset and suggests it could outperform traditional markets over the next decade.

Base Case: $1.3 Million Bitcoin by 2035

According to Bitwise’s Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions report, Bitcoin is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 28.3% over the next decade, pushing its price to around $1.3 million. By comparison, U.S. equities are forecasted to grow at just 6.2% annually, bonds at 4.0%, and gold at 3.8%.

This significant spread suggests that Bitcoin is not only carving out its own niche as “digital gold,” but also emerging as a high-growth institutional asset class.

Alternative Scenarios: Bull vs. Bear Outcomes

While the base case sits at $1.3 million, Bitwise outlines a broad spectrum of possible outcomes:

  • Bullish Case: Bitcoin could climb as high as $2.97 million by 2035, with a CAGR of nearly 39.4%.

  • Bearish Case: The price may fall back to $88,000, representing only 2% annual growth.

These divergent scenarios reflect Bitcoin’s inherent volatility and the uncertainty surrounding future regulation, adoption, and macroeconomic shifts.

What’s Driving the Forecast?

1. Institutional Adoption Accelerates

  • Institutions now dominate the market, accounting for over 75% of Bitcoin trading volume, a sharp shift away from retail-led activity.

  • Corporate accumulation is surging: 35 publicly traded firms now hold at least 1,000 BTC each, up from 24 earlier this year.

  • Institutional demand currently exceeds Bitcoin’s daily mining supply by a factor of six, highlighting a deep supply-demand imbalance.

2. Structural Scarcity

  • Bitcoin’s hard cap of 21 million coins remains its defining feature.

  • By 2032, annual issuance will fall to just 0.2%, reinforcing its scarcity.

  • Roughly 70% of Bitcoin’s supply has not moved for over a year, showing strong conviction among long-term holders.

3. Macroeconomic Pressures

  • Rising U.S. debt levels and persistent inflation concerns are eroding confidence in fiat currencies.

  • Bitcoin is increasingly viewed as a hedge against monetary debasement, similar to gold, but with stronger upside potential.

4. Market Maturity

Bitwise argues that Bitcoin’s market is evolving beyond its early cycles. The firm bluntly states:

“The four-year cycle is dead. Bitcoin is no longer a retail-driven market.”

Instead, Bitcoin is behaving more like an institutional-grade asset, sensitive to macro conditions and capital flows rather than retail speculation.

Risks and Volatility Ahead

Bitwise cautions that while the long-term outlook is bullish, risks remain:

  • Regulatory uncertainty, especially around ETFs, taxation, and custody.

  • Macroeconomic shocks that could depress risk assets.

  • Technological risks, including future advances like quantum computing.

  • Recurring drawdowns of 30–60%—volatility remains a permanent feature of Bitcoin markets.

Bitwise’s projection to $1.3 million underscores Bitcoin’s transformation from a speculative digital asset into a core component of institutional portfolios. With supply fixed and demand accelerating, the long-term case is compelling. However, the journey will be turbulent, and investors should expect extreme volatility along the way.

Still, if the forecast proves accurate, Bitcoin would cement its place as one of the most powerful wealth-generating assets of the 21st century.
