Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs Experience Outflows Amid Inflation Concerns Linked to Trade Tariffs
both Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) exchange-traded funds (ETFs) experienced significant outflows, totaling $290 million. This marked the first daily decline in Bitcoin ETFs since August 22. Ethereum ETFs saw a net outflow of $164.64 million, ending a five-day streak of inflows. The outflows were attributed to rising core inflation, which reached 2.9% in July, driven in part by President Trump's recent tariff policies.
Inflationary Pressures and Tariff Impacts
The Federal Reserve's Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index, a key inflation gauge, reported a 2.9% increase in July, marking its third consecutive monthly rise. Economists attribute this uptick to the 10% "reciprocal tariff" on most imports, introduced earlier in the year. These tariffs have led to higher consumer prices, particularly in sectors like groceries and apparel, with estimates suggesting a $2,400 annual burden per household.
Despite these inflationary pressures, financial markets have priced in an 87.5% chance of a quarter-point rate cut by the Federal Reserve in September. This expectation is based on signs of labor market softening and reduced consumer spending, which may prompt the Fed to act to support economic growth.
Market Reactions and ETF Flows
The outflows from BTC and ETH ETFs reflect investor caution amid the current economic climate. While Ethereum ETFs had attracted over $4 billion in inflows earlier in August, the recent outflows suggest a shift in investor sentiment. This cautious approach is likely influenced by concerns over inflation and the potential economic impact of ongoing trade policies.
The recent outflows from Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs highlight the complex interplay between macroeconomic factors and cryptocurrency markets. While digital assets are often viewed as hedges against inflation, the current economic environment, characterized by rising inflation and trade uncertainties, is influencing investor behavior. As the Federal Reserve prepares for its upcoming policy meeting, market participants will be closely monitoring any indications of changes in monetary policy that could impact asset flows in the coming months.
